Jürgen-Joachim von Sandrart

Lieutenant General of the German Bundeswehr

Lieutenant General Jürgen-Joachim von Sandrart commanded the Multinational Corps Northeast, stationed in Szczecin, as Commanding General from November 2021 to November 2024, responsible for the defense of NATO's northeastern flank between Estonia and northern Poland.
He will retire on April 1st.

In 1982 he began his service in the Bundeswehr as a reserve officer candidate with Panzer Battalion 84 in Lüneburg. In 1983 he switched to an officer career, studied economics and organizational sciences at the Helmut-Schmidt-University in Hamburg and attended the German General Staff Course at the German War Academy, also in Hamburg, from 1996-1998. His military career took him through all command levels from platoon commander to commanding general.

Before his current assignment, he led the 1st German Amoured Division for three years. Alternating with his command assignments, he was repeatedly deployed to the Federal Ministry of Defense - including as chef du cabinet of the German CHOD, in troop general staff assignments as G3 department head for operations and at the strategic command level of NATO - SHAPE. His foreign missions took him repeatedly to the Balkans and Afghanistan.

He is married to Harriet, née Kolster; they have four adult children; their home is in the Altes Land near Stade.
